We had a blazing good time kicking off our Summer Reading Program thanks to a very special guest - Smokey Bear himself! 🐻A huge thank you to the Kentucky Department of Forestry for connecting us with the iconic Smokey. The kids went wild singing (perhaps under the influence of cupcakes) "Happy Birthday" to celebrate Smokey's 80th birthday coming up in August.Smokey's timeless message of wildfire prevention ties in perfectly with our summer of exploring the great outdoors through books. His visit left everyone motivated to read, have fun, and be safe adventurers all summer long. This unforgettable event kicked off a summer of reading challenges, activities, special guests, snacks and more. 80 and still smoking hot. πŸ”₯Well done, Smokey. #SmokeyBear80 #SummerReadingGallatin #WildfirePrevention

Data visualization is a powerful tool for libraries to showcase our impact and value. I've been creating a tableau map depicting metrics across Kentucky libraries for the latest annual report period. The map displays gate counts, which can indicate visitor foot traffic when the counting systems are reliable. According to the data, the statewide median gate count was 37,000. To better understand visitor engagement, I took each library's gate count and divided it by their service population to calculate a visitor ratio metric. At our library, we recorded a gate count of 30,000 visitors, which translates to a visitor ratio of 3.46, with the state median at 1.99. The map also showcases circulation numbers, another crude but telling metric of community engagement with library materials. The busiest main libraries in terms of circulation volumes are highlighted. As we know, these are just a few metrics libraries use to demonstrate our value. But visualizing the data in this way helps identify potential strengths, areas for improvement, and opportunities to better understand patrons' needs through benchmarking.

Had the pleasure of attending the Boost Collaborative conference last week, and one of the highlights was Sheryl Davis's interactive workshop "Everybody Reads: Strategies to Build Literacy Engagement Partnerships."As libraries, we strive to develop robust literacy programs that engage families and community partners. Dr. Davis provided invaluable insights into fostering these vital collaborations through a community-centered approach. Her hands-on session explored practical strategies for sharing power and working cooperatively with youth, families, summer programs, organizations like libraries, and municipal agencies. I especially enjoyed hearing about their innovative partnership with the Golden State Warriors basketball team. #boostconference
