Is Iron Flame inappropriate? ›

A fair amount of violence, but all of it is wrapped in a clear fantasy package. Fighting and war has combat, fist fights, wrestling, knife fights, stabbings, wounds, blood, and death. People are burned to death by dragon fire, people die from broken necks, stabbings, neck slashes, arrow punctures, and sword impaling.

Honestly it's fine if you're mature enough. I read this and Fourth Wing at 13, alongside many of my friends and peers, and it was nothing too much.

The book features sexual encounters and conversations/banter about sex. The encounters are steamy, and though there are more sexual encounters in Iron Flame, it's still not as often as in the Court books.

The biggest problem with “Iron Flame” is the pacing. I enjoyed the constant propelling of motion throughout the plot, where each chapter ended with a mind-boggling cliffhanger that made it almost impossible for me to put the book down.

Yarros has been accused of misusing the Scottish Gaelic language in her series after mispronouncing several Scottish Gaelic words from her novel during interviews leading up to Iron Flame's release.

In Fourth Wing, the spicy scenes happen in Chapter 30 and Chapter 32; though there is a kissing scene prior to that. The spicy scenes in Iron Flame, and indeed its predecessor Fourth Wing, are a hot (sorry) topic of conversation online.

While “Fourth Wing” stood as a true masterpiece in Yarros's Empyrean series, “Iron Flame” also falls within that category, despite occasional instances of cheesy dialogue and overused story tropes. These minor flaws pale in comparison to the brilliance of its plot.

The romance was still just as cringe-worthy and I skimmed over every single sex scene between the main characters. Just no interest in reading their nonsense. Luckily I do enjoy the other relationships and friendships between the main squad.

Being an adult romance, this is also a book with spicy scenes, a fact that has weirdly earned this book criticism from some. After seeing one reviewer attack this book as being stuffed with useless sex scenes, I was braced for the lead character to start getting hot and heavy by the 25% mark.

With much expectation and excitement leading up to its release, the book's intensity turned lackluster in plot, confusing and often backwards in character development and could have been cut by nearly 100 pages.
